Ch. 8: When I Should Have Pivoted but Sold Instead
My drone-reviews site hit $2,600/mo, then plateaued for seven straight months. No update hurt it — it just stopped growing. Reviews were getting expensive ($600+ per unit to test honestly), and YouTube was eating the buyer's research phase.
I had two doors: pivot the domain into "drone photography tutorials" (info traffic, ad-supported, cheap to produce) or sell.
I sold for $73,000 (28x). Clean exit, good multiple. But the buyer did exactly the pivot I'd considered — added a tutorials section, kept the reviews as the money layer — and reportedly took it to $5k/mo within a year.
I don't fully regret it; I needed the cash for two other builds. But I sold a plateau as if it were a ceiling.
Lesson banked: a plateau in revenue is often a niche begging for a content-format pivot, not an exit signal — make sure you've tried the cheap door before the expensive one.
