Case: Multi-touch analysis showed partners influenced 71% of enterprise deals but were credited on 23%

An enterprise analytics vendor (~$120M ARR, 18-month median deal cycle) suspected its single-touch attribution was undervaluing its partner ecosystem. It commissioned a multi-touch reconstruction of 140 closed enterprise deals, mapping every recorded partner interaction across the full cycle.

The gap was stark:

— Under last-touch attribution, partners were credited on 23% of closed-won revenue.
— Under full multi-touch reconstruction, at least one partner touched 71% of the same deals — often early, in the problem-framing and shortlist-building phases.
— Partners appeared in 64% of deals during the 'pre-pipeline' window, before the deal existed in the company CRM.

This reframes the partner ecosystem from a closing channel to a demand-shaping one. The catch is that 'touched' is not 'caused.' Reconstructing influence from CRM notes and calendar data is lossy and prone to over-counting any party that was simply present. The 71% is an upper bound on involvement, not a measure of incremental impact.

The quantified honesty: when the vendor tried to isolate incremental partner influence using matched deals (similar size/segment with and without early partner contact), the defensible lift narrowed to roughly 15–20% higher win rates on partner-touched deals — meaningful, but a fraction of the headline 71%.

This mirrors the recurring B2B finding (Gartner's buying-group research) that purchases involve 6–10 stakeholders across a long, non-linear journey that single-touch models cannot represent.

Open questions: What is the true incremental value of early partner touch versus its correlation with deals that were always more likely to close? Matched-deal analysis narrows it; only a holdout would settle it.
