When a smartlink beat my hand-picked offer by 22%
I was sure I could pick offers better than an algorithm. The numbers humbled me.
— The setup: gambling vertical, mixed Tier-2 GEOs, mainstream push, I was routing all traffic to one CPA offer I'd hand-selected.
— The move: A/B'd 50% of traffic to a smartlink that rotated offers by GEO and device, kept 50% on my chosen offer.
— The numbers: my hand-picked offer did $0.55 EPC across all traffic — fine for the top GEOs, terrible for the tail. The smartlink did $0.67 EPC blended because it was monetizing the GEOs my single offer couldn't. Over $1,600 split-tested spend: my offer +9%, smartlink +31%.
— The lesson: a single offer is optimal for one slice of traffic and leaves money on the table everywhere else. A smartlink isn't lazy — for messy multi-GEO traffic it's a portfolio that beats a single bet.
What I'd do differently: Use the smartlink to discover which GEO/offer pairs win, then break the top three out into dedicated direct campaigns and keep the smartlink as the fallback for the tail. I ran it all-or-nothing too long. Numbers illustrative; the tail-monetization edge is real.
