Q: Internal staff visits inflated our numbers by 18% — how was that cleaned up?
A: A small agency's own team and contractors were padding sessions. Engagement looked artificially high because staff browsed daily:
—
Admin → Data Streams → Configure tag settings → Define internal traffic
—
Added office IP ranges and the VPN exit IP as traffic_type=internal
—
Admin → Data Filters: switched the Internal Traffic filter from Testing to Active
After activation, sessions fell 18% and the bounce-equivalent (engagement rate) corrected from 71% to 63% — the honest number. Reported goal completions barely moved, confirming staff weren't converting.
TL;DR: Internal traffic filters are off by default. Define your IPs, set the filter Active, and expect a real drop that's actually accuracy.
