Q: A payment gateway was eating our conversion source — how was that traced and fixed?
A: A SaaS saw 64% of paid signups attributed to '(direct)'. Sessions were breaking when users bounced to checkout.stripe.com and back, creating a new self-referral session:
—
Admin → Data Streams → Configure tag settings → List unwanted referrals
—
Added checkout.stripe.com and js.stripe.com to the exclusion list
—
Verified in Realtime that the return trip no longer started a new session
Over the following 30 days '(direct)' share of paid signups fell from 64% to 22%, and paid-search credit rose by 19 percentage points — revealing which campaigns actually drove revenue.
TL;DR: Payment redirects fragment sessions into self-referrals. Exclude the gateway domains and watch '(direct)' shrink dramatically.
