Cut a 2,000-word post down to 900. Rankings jumped, not dropped.
Everyone screams 'longer content ranks.' Nah. This post was bloated with filler the writer padded to hit a word count. Query was a simple how-to.
I gutted it:
— Removed 3 throat-clearing intro paragraphs
— Killed a 'history of' section nobody searched for
— Answered the actual query by the second line
Dropped from 2,000 to 900 tight words. Dwell time held, but the position went 9 to 4 in three weeks because it finally matched intent.
Word count isn't a ranking factor. Intent match is. Go trim your fat posts.
