The homepage hero video that was scaring people off

A mid-size travel site had a beautiful autoplay hero video and a homepage bounce rate of 63%. Leadership loved the video. The data didn't.

The clue was in segmented engagement: visitors on slower connections — about 30% of mobile traffic — had a bounce rate of 81% versus 49% for everyone else. The page sat blank for 3.4 seconds while the video buffered, and people left before it loaded.

They swapped autoplay for a static hero image with a click-to-play button.

Mobile bounce dropped from 81% to 58% for that slow-connection segment, and homepage-to-search clicks rose 22%. The video was a feature for the people who could load it and a wall for those who couldn't.

Lesson: average bounce hides the segment that's actually suffering. Slice by connection speed before you defend a heavy hero.
