Why we ignored a KD 64 score and ranked anyway in 70 days
A 3,400-vol term scored KD 64, normally a 'skip' in our workflow. We checked the actual SERP instead of trusting the score.
— Tool difficulty score: 64
— Top 10 referring domains, median: ▇▇ 11
— Our domain's referring domains: 240
— Top 10 pages with thin or off-intent content: 6 of 10
The score was inflated by two outlier high-authority results. The other eight were weak. We published a tightly-matched page with zero new links.
Reached position 4 in 70 days.
So what: a single difficulty number averages away the gaps. The median backlink profile of the top 10 tells you the real entry cost.
Benchmark of the week: in 40% of KD 55-70 SERPs we sampled, the median top-10 page had under 15 referring domains.
