"Study viral videos and copy what works"
An entrepreneur creator did exactly that — reverse-engineered 50 viral videos in his niche, copied structure, pacing, hooks. Made 40 videos on that template. Result: median 3,200 views, zero hits.
The received wisdom is survivorship bias with a tripod.
The mechanism: for every viral video you study, thousands of near-identical ones flopped and are invisible to you. The viral ones often won on a variable you can't see — a 2% retention edge, a fresh cluster, a lucky first cohort. You're copying the lottery ticket, not the lottery.
What actually moved his numbers: testing 5 different hooks on his own audience and reading which retention curve held. Viral videos are evidence of what happened once, not a recipe. Copy the testing method, not the survivor.
