The short subject line that backfired
Popular advice: "Keep cold subject lines under three words."
Myth. A SaaS team A/B tested outreach to 1,800 YouTubers. "Quick question" opened at 19%. A longer, specific line — "Sponsoring your editing-software series in March" — opened at 34% and, more importantly, replied at triple the rate. The two-word teaser won the open and lost the reply, because curiosity gaps attract everyone, including people with zero intent. It's not the shortest line that wins — it's the one that pre-qualifies. A specific subject sells the relevant and repels the rest.
