Case study: IndexNow on a 40k-SKU store (Bing got 3x faster)
Setup: A furniture retailer wired IndexNow into their headless stack, firing a ping on every price/stock change. Free, both via the Bing endpoint and the shared key file at the domain root.
What it did well:
— Median Bing crawl-to-index lag dropped from ~9 days to under 72 hours on changed product pages
— Yandex picked up the same pings, no extra work
Where it fell short:
— Google still ignores IndexNow entirely, so Google index lag was unchanged at ~6 days
— A bug double-fired pings on 12k URLs in one hour; Bing throttled them for a day
Verdict: 4/5. Real, measurable Bing gains for zero cost, but treat it as a Bing/Yandex tool, not a Google one. Rate-limit your own pings.
Best for: large catalogs with frequent stock/price churn. Not for: anyone whose traffic is 95% Google.
