Why injecting JSON-LD via Tag Manager is a quiet gamble
The tactic spreads in SEO circles: can't touch the template, so push your structured data through Google Tag Manager. It works — until it doesn't, and the failure is invisible.
The insider caveat: GTM injects markup via JavaScript after page load, so it only counts if Google's rendering pass executes the container and completes — which is inconsistent and can lag days. Mueller has explicitly called GTM-injected structured data workable but not equivalent to server-rendered markup.
What it means for you — use GTM for structured data only as a stopgap, validate with the live URL test (not the code test) to confirm Google actually renders it, and move it server-side the moment you can. Watch this: client-rendered anything is the fragile layer as crawl budgets tighten.
