Meet an accountant in Bristol whose rankings wobbled for no reason he could see. Some weeks top-three, some weeks page two. Same effort, same reviews. The instability was the symptom; the disease was hiding in his citations.
Across 40-odd directories his address appeared four different ways. 'Suite 4' here, 'Unit 4' there, the old street name in two old listings, a former phone number lingering on three. Google couldn't be certain which version was true, so it trusted him less.
We audited every citation and forced one canonical format: exact address, suite, postcode, phone. Identical, everywhere. We fixed 31 listings by hand.
Nothing moved for a fortnight. Consistency is a trust signal that accrues slowly.
Then the confidence built, the wobble stopped, and his pin settled into a stable position.
He locked into top-three for 'accountant' in his postcode and stayed there, week after week. Enquiries rose 26 percent simply because Google finally believed his address.
The lesson: inconsistent citations don't just fail to help. They actively make Google doubt you.
