Q: Email alerts are good enough for downtime, aren't they?

A: For anything urgent, no, and relying on them alone bites teams hard. Email is best-effort and slow: it can sit in a queue, land in spam, get batched by the provider, or simply not buzz your phone at 3am. The exact moment you need speed is the moment email is least reliable.

The myth is that an alert sent equals an alert received. Delivery isn't acknowledgment.

Recommendation: match the channel to the severity. Critical, user-facing outages should page via SMS or a push app with escalation, if the first person doesn't acknowledge in N minutes, it moves to the next. Reserve email for low-priority, informational notices.

Follow-up: test your escalation path on a schedule, an untested on-call chain fails exactly when it matters.
