Synthetic monitoring and real user monitoring (RUM) serve different purposes. Most webmasters use neither, then wonder why their performance metrics look fine but conversions are low.
Synthetic monitoring: a bot visits your site on a schedule from specific locations and measures load time, availability, and page rendering. Catches issues before real users encounter them. This is what UptimeRobot, Pingdom, and similar tools do.
Real User Monitoring: JavaScript on your page captures actual performance data from real visitors — their actual connection speeds, devices, browsers, and geographic locations. Shows you performance from the user's perspective.
Why you need both:
A synthetic check from a US data center might show 800ms load time. Your RUM data might show that 30% of your visitors are on mobile in Southeast Asia and experiencing 4.5 second loads.
RUM tools: Google Analytics 4 has basic web vitals data. SpeedCurve, Cloudflare Browser Insights, and New Relic offer more detail. Google's CrUX (Chrome UX Report) provides real-world Core Web Vitals data for free.
