"Get to the point faster" was the wrong fix

My retention dipped at 5s and everyone said the same thing: cut the setup, get to the point faster. So I axed the runway and jumped straight to the tactic at second 1. 3s retention 73%. Worse, not better. With no setup, the tactic had no stakes, so it read as boring how-to.

I added context back, but as tension, not filler: "This took me three failed launches to figure out, and the fix is one sentence." Now the delay built anticipation for that one sentence.

3s retention 84%. Average view duration up 9 seconds.

The lesson: "get to the point faster" isn't always the cure. Sometimes a longer runway that promises the point outperforms jumping straight to it cold.
