"Open with a shocking stat" backfired hard

The playbook said lead with a big scary number. My hook: "92% of affiliates quit in their first year." Sounds gripping. It wasn't. 3s retention 67%. The problem: a stat about a faceless "92%" has no stakes for ME, the viewer.

I rewrote it to put the number on one person's body: "I was 11 months into affiliate marketing, $0 earned, about to quit." Same despair, one human, real stakes.

3s retention 83%. Comments filled with "this is me."

Views 25k to 110k.

The lesson: a statistic is a fact, a story is a stake. "92% quit" is trivia. "I was about to quit" is a hook, because they're watching to find out if you made it.
