Myth: lots of roles make members feel special

Myth: lots of roles make members feel special

Color roles, tiers, badges everywhere — pitched as identity and belonging. Status-system research suggests proliferation dilutes the thing it's meant to create.

What the data shows
The motivating power of a status marker scales inversely with how many people hold it and how easily it's earned. In servers with dozens of trivially-acquired roles, the markers stop signaling anything — everyone's "special," so no one is. Studies of status hierarchies find recognition motivates only when it's scarce, legible, and tied to genuine contribution. A wall of cosmetic roles is none of those.

Why it happens
Status is positional — its value comes from relative scarcity. Inflate the supply and you devalue every unit, exactly like currency.

The caveat
Low-stakes cosmetic roles still serve real functions: self-expression, pings, segmentation. They're just not status, and shouldn't be expected to do status's motivational work. Conflating the two is the error.

Open question: does a single hard-to-earn recognition role outperform a dozen easy ones on contribution — and at what point does scarcity tip from motivating into gatekeeping resentment?
