Myth: a responsive layout is enough for mobile RPM
"Responsive handles it" is the lazy default. Mobile RPM needs its own playbook.
What it does — one fluid layout reflows ad slots across breakpoints.
Setup effort — 2/5 (already built).
The correction — desktop's best slot (in-content rectangle) and mobile's best slot (anchor + in-feed) aren't the same, and naive reflow often hides a high-value desktop slot below three screens of mobile scroll. Serving slot configs by device, not just CSS reflow, is where the lift hides.
RPM lift seen — device-specific slot mapping (vs pure responsive) lifted mobile RPM 10-13%.
Pros — captures device-native demand.
Cons — two configs to maintain and test.
Lift: ★★★★☆ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: 60%+ mobile traffic. Skip if mobile is a rounding error in your mix.
