Myth: keep ads under 30% of the page and you're safe
The "30% rule" gets quoted like policy. Google never published that number.
What it does — a self-imposed ratio of ad area to content area.
Setup effort — 1/5 to measure.
The correction — there's no fixed percentage in any policy. What gets you penalized is ads above the fold pushing content down and tap-bait placement, not a ratio. You can run a heavy in-content density on a long article and be fine; you can run "20%" and get flagged if it's all stacked ATF.
RPM lift seen — moving density below the fold (same ad area) lifted RPM 7% and cleared a policy warning.
Pros — focuses effort on placement, not a fake number.
Cons — harder to audit than a single ratio.
Lift: ★★★★☆ — Risk: ★★☆☆☆
Best for: long-form sites. Skip the 30% math; audit ATF instead.
