The FAQ that ranked everywhere except where it was written
A B2B site's FAQ content ranked — but for the wrong pages. The right pages, with the actual answers, got nothing. The culprit: tabs that mounted on click. Here's the audit.
— I inspected the rendered HTML with all tabs closed. Only the active tab's content was in the DOM. The other four tabs were empty divs until clicked.
— Googlebot doesn't click. Four-fifths of the answers never entered the crawl.
The tab/accordion checklist:
— Render ALL tab/accordion panels in the DOM; hide inactive ones with CSS (display:none is fine, Google reads it)
— Never fetch panel content on click — ship it in the initial HTML
— Reserve JS only for the show/hide toggle, not for mounting content
— Verify: open rendered HTML with JS off, confirm every panel's text is present
We changed click-to-mount into CSS show/hide with all panels server-rendered.
Result: FAQ-bearing pages went from 6% of answers indexed to 100%, and 'what is / how does' queries on those URLs rose +38% in 7 weeks.
