Myth: the best content keeps members from leaving
Content is replaceable — there's always a better newsletter, a slicker course, a free YouTube version. If members stay for your content, they leave the moment something better appears. What's not replaceable is the relationships they'd lose by leaving. Retention is social, not informational.
The correction — engineer switching costs that are human:
☐ Make members visible to each other (profiles, roles, recurring faces)
☐ Create relationships through repeated small-group interaction, not broadcast
☐ Build shared history members would lose by leaving (their threads, their wins, their reputation)
☐ Track 'has a member made a connection here?' as a retention signal
☐ Optimize for 'who would they miss', not 'what would they miss'
People don't leave communities where they have relationships. Content gets them in; connection keeps them.
