"Always put hook text on screen" overloaded the open
The advice: caption your hook on frame one so silent viewers read it. So I plastered my full hook as on-screen text AND said it aloud. The text was "How I got 50 clients from one cold email." Problem: the eye reads it in 1 second, gets the whole promise, and the spoken version becomes redundant. 3s retention 72%.
I made the on-screen text a different, partial tease than the spoken line. Screen: "50 clients." Voice: "...from a cold email I almost didn't send." Text and audio now combine instead of repeat.
3s retention 85%.

The lesson: on-screen text shouldn't echo your voiceover, it should add a second layer. Make eyes and ears get different pieces, and they'll stay to assemble the whole.
