The email capture I bolt onto a niche site
For years I let 100% of my traffic leave and never come back. On my coffee site I finally built capture and now 18% of monthly revenue comes from email — traffic I already paid for once. Here's the build.
— Pick ONE genuinely useful asset tied to the niche: I made a 1-page 'Espresso Dial-In Cheat Sheet' PDF in Canva, 90 minutes
— Place the opt-in in 3 spots: inline after the intro of my top 5 posts, a non-intrusive footer bar, and the end of every how-to
— NO popups for the first month — I didn't want to risk bounce signals on young pages
— Welcome sequence: 3 emails over a week, all value, the third softly recommends the gear I'm an affiliate for
— Tag subscribers by which magnet they grabbed, so I segment buyer intent
— Email the list a genuinely useful tip every 2 weeks; sell maybe 1 in 5 sends
Month 3 of running it: 1,400 subscribers, the welcome sequence alone converted affiliate sales at 3x my site's rate because the trust was warmer.
The setback: my first lead magnet was a generic '10 coffee tips' nobody wanted — 0.4% opt-in. The specific dial-in cheat sheet hit 4%. Specificity won.
The takeaway: You're renting traffic from Google; email is the part you own. Build one hyper-specific lead magnet and a value-first sequence — it's the highest-trust channel you'll have.
