My step-by-step after a core update hits
March update dropped my outdoor site 40% in a weekend. Month 1 I panicked and rewrote everything — wrong move. The recovery came from a calm diagnosis. Here's the order I follow now.
— Wait 5 days. Algorithm updates jitter for a week; reacting on day 1 means chasing noise
— In Search Console, compare the 28 days before vs after. Don't look at site-wide — find WHICH pages lost. Mine: only my thin affiliate roundups dropped, my deep guides held
— That told me the story: Google devalued shallow 'best of' lists with no real testing
— I picked the 5 biggest losers and added genuine first-hand detail — actual measurements, photos I took, specifics no AI could fake
— Checked the winners replacing me; every one had hands-on proof I lacked
— Improved author bio and added an 'how we tested' section site-wide for E-E-A-T signals
— Logged everything, changed nothing else, waited for the NEXT update to judge
The following core update, those 5 pages recovered to about 85% of prior traffic. The ones I left thin stayed down.
The setback: I'd added affiliate links to 30 posts right before the update with no real value — that's exactly what got hit.
The takeaway: Don't rewrite blindly after an update. Diagnose WHICH pages fell, find the pattern, and fix the quality gap — usually it's missing first-hand experience.
