Geo Pulse #44 — This week: localization past Google Translate
Theme: the GEOs where 'translate the page' silently breaks conversion. Curated gotchas, each one I've seen tank a funnel.
→ RTL languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Farsi, Urdu) — the whole layout mirrors, not just text. Forms, progress bars, and arrows all flip. A translated-but-not-mirrored page reads as obviously foreign.
→ Plural rules — Arabic has six plural forms, Russian three, Polish a famously thorny set. Hard-coded '{n} items' breaks. Reference: Unicode CLDR plural data.
→ Number & date formats — '1,000.50' vs '1.000,50', DD/MM vs MM/DD. Pricing that looks wrong loses trust instantly.
→ Formal vs informal address — German Sie/du, French vous/tu set the entire tone. Wrong register = wrong audience.
Point your localizer at CLDR before your translator.
