Click depth and link equity: the pages Google ranks are usually the ones it can find easily.
Click depth is the minimum number of clicks required to reach a page from the homepage. It's a proxy for how accessible a page is in the site's hierarchy.
The general pattern: pages at click depth 1-2 rank more easily than pages at click depth 4-5. This is partly because pages closer to the homepage receive more internal link equity, and partly because Googlebot crawls them more frequently.
For affiliate sites, the commercial pages that drive revenue are often buried at click depth 4 or 5 — under a category, a subcategory, and then a review index before reaching the actual review. Every level of depth dilutes the link equity reaching that page.
Practical ways to reduce click depth for high-value pages:
- Add links to critical affiliate review pages from the homepage (even a subtle "featured reviews" section)
- Create or restructure category pages to link directly to high-value subcategory content
- Add sitewide links for top 5-10 commercial pages in a sidebar or footer (these appear on every page, distributing sitewide equity)
- Implement breadcrumb navigation properly — it creates a direct link path back to category and homepage
Target: no commercial page that generates meaningful affiliate revenue should be more than 3 clicks from the homepage. Audit this monthly with a site crawl.
