Myth: a quiet channel means the community is dying
Reacting to quiet by carpet-bombing prompts trains members to ignore you and makes the room feel desperate. Some quiet is seasonal, some is the wrong room, some is healthy async behavior. Panic-posting accelerates the death you're trying to prevent.
The correction — Diagnose before you post:
☐ Check if joins are still happening (acquisition vs. engagement problem?)
☐ Check if the quiet is one channel or the whole community
☐ Look at lurker reads/opens — silent ≠ absent
☐ Compare to last quarter — is this a seasonal dip?
☐ Only intervene if breadth metrics (unique posters) are truly falling
If it's one dead channel, merge it. If it's seasonal, wait. If it's structural, fix activation — don't spray prompts. Treat the cause, not the symptom.
Save this for your next launch.
