ProductGroup is the variant fix most stores still aren't running
Google shipped
ProductGroup
and
hasVariant
support to solve the duplicate-content mess that plagues color/size variant pages — and adoption is shockingly low.
The insider angle: without it, each variant URL competes as a separate Product, splitting reviews and ratings and confusing which page Google surfaces. With
ProductGroup
, you declare a parent entity, attach variants via
hasVariant
, and use
variesBy
to name the differentiating axes (color, size). Reviews can consolidate to the group.
What it means for you — if you run any catalog with variants, this is the highest-leverage markup change available; it directly addresses cannibalization the canonical tag alone can't. Watch this: shopping surfaces increasingly key off ProductGroup-level data.
