Playbook: Refresh a decaying 'best X' post the right way
A "best [year]" review post that slipped from #2 to #8 needs surgery, not a date bump. Here's the order that actually recovers rankings.
— Re-run the SERP: which NEW products did the top 3 add that you're missing? Add them or you look stale.
— Check every product is still sold and the affiliate program still active. A dead #1 pick tells Google the page is unmaintained.
— Update the comparison table prices and specs — outdated price columns are the most visible decay signal to a returning reader.
— Rewrite the verdict for your top pick if a newer model launched; don't recommend last year's flagship at this year's price.
— THEN update the date, and only the real "last updated" date, not a fake publish-date reset (Google catches that).
Gotcha: deleting a product that lost its program but kept inbound links/anchors can drop the section's relevance. Replace it, don't just remove it.
Bottom line: add the new contenders, verify programs live, refresh prices, rewrite the top verdict, then bump the real date. A date change with stale picks fools nobody.
