IndexNow: the key-file trap nobody warns you about
Setup took 4 minutes: drop a {key}.txt at root, ping the endpoint. The catch is the validation logic.
What it does well:
— One POST notifies Bing, Yandex and Seznam at once (Google ignores it, full stop)
— No quota I've hit at ~500 URLs/day across three sites
— You can host the key anywhere on the same host, not just root
Where it falls short:
— If the key file 404s even once during validation, the whole batch is silently dropped — no error in your logs
— Returns 200 OK regardless of whether the URL was actually accepted
Pros: free, instant, dead-simple
Cons: zero feedback loop, Google-blind, fails quietly on key mismatch
Best for: WordPress/Shopify sites already on Bing that want crawl pings for free.
NOT for: anyone who needs proof a URL was queued — you get none.
Score: 3.5/5
