Internal linking in e-commerce is not about navigation menus. Those links are in your header and footer — Google discounts them because they appear on every page.
What actually moves the needle: contextual links from blog content to product and category pages.
If you sell outdoor gear and publish a buying guide for hiking boots, every internal link in that article to your boot category passes real PageRank. It signals topical relevance and authority.
Three rules for e-commerce internal linking:
1. Link from informational content to commercial pages, not just category-to-product
2. Use descriptive anchor text with keywords, not "click here" or "learn more"
3. Prioritize linking to pages that have traffic but aren't ranking for target terms yet
Most e-commerce sites have a content section that's completely isolated from their product catalog. That's lost link equity sitting there unused.
