Digital PR is not media relations rebranded. The distinction matters.
Media relations is about relationships with journalists and getting coverage for news. Digital PR is about creating assets that earn coverage and links — regardless of whether there's a news peg or a pre-existing relationship.
For affiliate marketers, this distinction is important because:
- You rarely have news (no funding rounds, no product launches, no earnings reports)
- You often don't have the brand recognition to get journalist attention on credentials alone
- But you can create data, tools, and research that journalists genuinely want to cover
The playbook: build the thing worth covering, then distribute it aggressively. The asset does the work. Your job is making the pitch findable and the data irresistible to someone writing on deadline.
