The 72-hour newsjack, run like a fire drill
A regulator dropped a surprise ruling at 9:14am, and our fintech client had a quote out by 11. Here's the drill we'd rehearsed.
Hour 0–1: One person reads the primary document, not the coverage. They pull two stats nobody else has framed yet.
Hour 1–2: We draft a single 40-word reaction quote with a number in it. No press release. A quote travels faster.
Hour 2–4: We map the eight reporters who already filed on this beat this month and send each a tailored line — not a blast.
Hour 4–24: We post the same data as a chart on the founder's feed so journalists can screenshot it.
The result: three pickups in American Banker, Protocol and a trade newsletter, all within the news cycle. Newsjacking — riding a breaking story with your own angle — only works if your asset is ready before your competitor has finished their coffee.
One reporter wrote back: "You're the only source who actually read page 30."
Lesson: Rehearse the workflow when nothing's happening, so on the day you're executing, not deciding.
