How to build a journalist network that responds before you even pitch a story

Cold outreach to journalists often fails because you are a stranger asking for a favor. To increase your reply rate, start building a rapport months before you have a launch. This shifts the dynamic from a transactional request to a professional relationship where they actually recognize your name in a crowded inbox.

Monitor their recent work and provide genuine value without a pitch. If they cover specific niches, send a brief note with a unique insight or a data point that complements their latest piece. Avoid generic praise; offer something that helps them do their job better or provides a new angle for their next story.

Position yourself as a reliable source. Let them know your areas of expertise and offer to provide quick quotes or background info for future articles. Journalists on tight deadlines appreciate having a vetted list of experts who respond fast and do not push a hidden agenda.

Treat PR like a long-term asset. By the time you send a pitch, your name should be familiar to the recipient, which significantly lowers the barrier for getting a "yes" for your link or coverage.
