Guest posting still works — but only on pages that send real readers

Guest posting is useful when the host site has a real audience, clear topical focus, and indexed articles that rank for long-tail queries. It stops working when the site is a link farm, publishes random topics, or accepts anything with a dofollow fee. In those places, the “placement” exists, but the referral value is near zero.

Good targets usually have:
• a narrow niche and consistent editorial tone
• author bios that matter to readers, not just SEO
• articles that get internal links and some visible traffic
• outbound links placed naturally inside useful content

Bad targets are easy to spot: thin category pages, dozens of unrelated guest posts, spun intros, or “write for us” pages that feel like a formality. If the site would never earn a click from your ideal reader, the backlink is doing all the work — and that makes the deal fragile.

For outreach, pitch a topic the site already covers, but add a gap: a checklist, comparison, process, or data-backed angle that improves the page. Avoid generic “I can write for you” messages. Editors reply faster when the idea fits their audience and saves them editing time.

Use guest posting as distribution, not decoration. If the page can rank, attract clicks, and support the topic you already want to own, it belongs in your list. If not, pass.
