Mentioning a prospect's last article proves you visited the site. It does not prove your message belongs in their inbox. Personalization starts with relevance: why this person, why this page, and why this offer now.
Before writing, check three signals:
• Their role matches the request.
• The page has a clear content or commercial gap.
• Your asset solves a problem their audience already has.
If you cannot name the connection in one sentence, the email is probably generic.
Use one specific observation, then connect it to a useful action. “Your post on X was great” is decoration. “Your guide covers A but skips B; we have data that fills that gap” gives the recipient a reason to assess the pitch.
Keep the ask proportional. Suggest an exact placement, explain the benefit, and make declining easy. Good personalization reduces decision effort; it is not a paragraph of compliments.
A relevant reason beats a researched compliment. Personalize the opportunity, not just the opening line.
