The comparison-table build that doubled my conversion
My 'best ergonomic chairs' post ranked #5 and converted at 1.1%. The #2 result had a sticky comparison table; I had a wall of text. Month 9 I rebuilt the table properly. Here's the recipe.
— 5 columns max: product, the ONE spec buyers actually argue about (weight rating), price tier, my one-line verdict, button
— Sort by my genuine top pick, not by commission — readers smell a rigged order and bounce
— Make it sticky on mobile so the CTA follows the scroll; 70% of my traffic was phones
— Add a 'best for' tag per row ('best for tall users') — those became featured-snippet bait
— One honest 'skip this if' note per product; the table that admits flaws outconverts the one that doesn't
— Place it after a 150-word intro, not at the very top — Google wants context first
Conversion went 1.1% to 2.4%. Same traffic, revenue on that page $310 to $680.
The setback: my first table had 9 columns and looked great on desktop, unreadable on mobile. Bounce rate jumped. Stripped it to 5 and it worked.
The takeaway: A comparison table isn't decoration — it's the conversion engine. Build it for the mobile thumb and the one spec buyers actually fight about.
