My 90-minute internal linking audit (the cluster fix)

Month 8 on a fishing-gear site, traffic flatlined at 7k. The content was fine. The links were a hairball — 120 posts pointing randomly at each other. Here's the audit that unstuck it.

— Export every URL into a sheet, two columns: 'links it sends' and 'links it receives'
— Flag orphans: anything receiving fewer than 2 internal links (I had 31 of them)
— Find the 5 posts I most want ranking; count their inbound links — my top money post had only 4
— Rule I now enforce: every pillar gets 8+ contextual inbound links from its own cluster, anchor text varied, no 'click here'
— Cap outbound: a 2,000-word post links to max 6 internal pages or the link equity smears too thin

I spent one Saturday adding 90 contextual links by hand. No new content at all.

Month 10: that money post climbed from #14 to #6, traffic 7k to 11k, revenue $480 to $790.

The setback: I over-linked at first, jammed 15 links into one post, and it actually dropped a spot. Pulled it back to 6 and it recovered.

The takeaway: Before writing more, audit what you have — most stalled sites are sitting on rankings trapped behind bad internal plumbing.
