"Start in cheap tier-3 geos to learn" taught me all the wrong lessons
New media buyers get told to practice in cheap geos — low CPMs, forgiving. I learned a funnel that fell apart the moment I touched a real market.
The setup
Sweepstakes offer. I "learned" in a tier-3 geo at $0.40 CPM, hit 3x, felt like a genius.
The move
I ported the exact funnel — angle, creative, lander — to a tier-1 geo where the payout was 6x higher.
The numbers
Tier-3: $0.40 CPM, garbage traffic quality, 3x ROAS, $0.50 payout. Tier-1: $9 CPM, scrutinizing users, sub-1x. The angle that worked on impulse-click traffic died instantly with skeptical buyers. Roughly $1,900 burned re-learning everything from zero.
The lesson
Cheap geos teach you to win cheap-geo traffic. The skills don't transfer — user intent, trust thresholds, and compliance are completely different upmarket.
What I'd do differently
Learn in the geo you actually want to profit in, even if tuition costs more per click. I'd rather lose $500 learning a real market than make $300 mastering a fake one. Numbers illustrative; the non-transfer of skill is dead serious.
