Ch. 5: The Zero-Difficulty Mirage
"Only target KD-under-10 keywords," said every course I'd watched. On my budgeting-app review site I built 60 articles around ultra-low-difficulty terms. Month 7: I ranked #1 for loads of them — and made $40/mo.
The problem dawned slowly. KD was low because nobody searched these terms, or because they had no buyer intent. 'Is budgeting hard' ranks easy and converts nothing.
I threw out the difficulty filter and re-prioritized by intent x volume, ignoring KD entirely. I went after harder 'best budgeting app for couples' type terms. Took nine months and real comparison content, but those pages — fewer than 20 of them — did $310/mo.
— Difficulty tools measure links, not opportunity
— Easy-to-rank and worth-ranking rarely overlap
Lesson banked: A keyword you can win but nobody wants is a trophy, not a business.
