— Open the SERP in incognito, scan the top 10 domains
— Count how many are big brands (Wirecutter, Forbes, Healthline) — 4+ and I skip, no matter the score
— Click the weakest-looking result: is it a real article or a thin page? If thin, I can beat it
— Check the page's word count and freshness — outranking a 2021 stub is easy money
— Look for forum/Reddit results in the top 5 — Google's tell that it wants a better answer

Using this, my new-site articles started landing page 1 in 8-10 weeks instead of never.
