Myth: unlinked brand mentions count as backlinks ("implied links")
A 2012 Google patent describing "express and implied links" launched a persistent belief that naming your brand without a hyperlink passes link-like authority. The gap between a patent and a live ranking factor is large.
Patents document what Google explored, not what ships. Google has never confirmed unlinked mentions flow PageRank-equivalent value, and spokespeople have downplayed it. What unlinked mentions plausibly do support is entity recognition — co-occurrence of your brand with topic terms helps systems (and the AI models now reading the web) understand what you're known for.
— Chase mentions for entity-building and AI citation visibility, not as a backlink substitute
— A real link still does things a mention can't: pass equity and a direct crawl path
Nuance: for AI-search citation specifically, frequency of branded co-mentions appears genuinely useful — so the tactic isn't worthless, it's just mis-explained as "implied links."
Confidence: medium
