Myth: changing the publish date refreshes a page in Google's eyes

Myth: changing the publish date refreshes a page in Google's eyes

The "just update the date to today" trick assumes freshness is read from a displayed timestamp. It isn't, and faking it can backfire.

Freshness signals are inferred from actual content change and re-crawl diffing, not from a date string in your template. Google has stated it looks at meaningful updates; flipping a date with no substantive edit produces no freshness benefit, and pattern-level date manipulation across a site is the kind of thing site-wide quality systems can learn to distrust.

Query deserves freshness (QDF) only kicks in for queries where recency matters — news, "best X 2026," prices. For evergreen how-tos, freshness is a weak factor regardless of date.

— Refresh by changing the content: new data, updated steps, removed dead info — then the date is honest
— Use dateModified schema reflecting real edits, not cosmetic ones

Caveat: a genuine substantive update often does lift rankings — which is why the date trick gets falsely credited.
Confidence: medium
