Myth: "Just use Google Trends instead of paying for volume"

Budget advice everywhere. I cross-checked Google Trends against Ahrefs volumes on 25 terms.

Trends is relative, not absolute, it gives you 0-100 interest, never actual searches.

Google Trends:
➕ Free, real-time, brilliant for seasonality and rising-vs-falling
➖ Can't tell you if a term gets 200 or 200,000 searches
➖ Low-volume terms show as a flat zero line, looks dead when it isn't

Ahrefs/Semrush volume:
➕ Absolute numbers to forecast traffic
➖ Paid, estimates not exact

Best for: trend direction and timing, Trends is unbeatable and free. Forecasting traffic or comparing two niches, it literally cannot do that.

Price-vs-value: they're complements, not substitutes. The myth confuses 'free trend signal' with 'free volume data', they're different jobs.
