Testing big changes on a copy first (staging)

A staging site is a private copy of your real site where you can experiment, break things, and nobody sees it. It's the single best habit for nervous beginners.

1. Check your hosting control panel for a "Staging" or "Create staging site" button, many hosts include one free.
2. Click it to clone your live site into a hidden copy.
3. Do your scary change there: a major theme switch, a big plugin, an update.
4. Click through the staging copy and confirm everything still works.
5. Only when you're happy, use the "Push to live" button to copy the changes back.

No staging button? Some backup plugins can clone a site to a test address instead.
