Myth: noindex thin product pages to avoid a penalty
'Q: I have 5,000 products with short manufacturer descriptions. Should I noindex the thin ones to dodge a penalty?'
Short answer: No — there's no "thin content penalty" for normal product pages, and noindexing them just deletes potential traffic.
The longer version: people confuse the spam-level thin content (doorway pages, auto-spun junk) with an ordinary product page that's simply short. A real product with a price, image, specs, and an add-to-cart button isn't thin in Google's eyes — it has clear purpose and intent satisfaction. Noindexing thousands of these removes long-tail rankings for specific model numbers and SKUs, which is exactly where e-com wins.
If many pages are near-identical (same description, different size), consolidate variants under one URL instead of hiding them. Fix duplication by structure, not by mass noindex.
Rule of thumb: short isn't thin. A page that satisfies a shopper's intent deserves to be indexed.
Follow-up: improve uniqueness with specs, FAQs, and real reviews before you ever reach for noindex.
