Q: GA4 killed bounce rate and gave me 'engagement rate'. What actually counts as engaged?
A: An engaged session meets any one of three conditions:
— Lasts longer than 10 seconds, or
— Has 2+ page/screen views, or
— Fires a Key event.
Engagement rate is engaged sessions ÷ total sessions. Bounce rate is just the inverse, so they're the same coin.
You can change the 10-second threshold: Admin → Data Streams → your stream → Configure tag settings → 'Adjust session timeout' also exposes the engaged-session timer. Raise it if 10s feels too generous for your content.
TL;DR: Engaged = 10s+ OR 2+ views OR a Key event. Bounce rate = 100% minus engagement rate.
