Here's what's really going on with "live" vs "historical" link counts
Every teardown argument starts here and most people get it backwards. Ahrefs "Live" index and Majestic "Historic" index answer different questions.
— Live shows what's standing right now — best for judging a competitor's current power.
— Historic shows everything ever seen — best for spotting a burned PBN or a churn-and-burn pattern.
— Spotted repeatedly: a profile with a clean Live count but a Historic count 5x bigger? That's a domain that's been bleeding links for years — instability, not strength.
The insiders read the ratio. Tight Live-to-Historic gap = stable, earned-ish profile. Huge gap = rented links and constant decay. Judge a rival by which index they'd rather you look at. Watch this space.
