The skyscraper post that earned 200 links and ranked for nothing — here's the autopsy
Not every link case is a win. Word is a marketing blog that nailed link acquisition and still flopped, and the footprint shows exactly why.
What we found:
— a flagship guide pulled 200 referring domains in a year — genuinely impressive
— but 90% of anchors were the article title or 'this guide' — descriptive, not commercial
— and the donor topics were all 'best content marketing tools' lists — the page itself was a how-to, not a tools page
The outcome: it ranked top-5 for one informational query and zero commercial ones. The links were real; the relevance was aimed at the wrong intent.
The read for anyone celebrating a link count: links inherit the topic of the page that gives them. 200 links from 'tools' roundups can't rank a 'how-to' page for tool queries. Match the donor intent to the target intent or the volume is theater. Watch this space.
